There are more than 450 horse farms surrounding Lexington, and the rolling hills with white plank fencing are something you genuinely never get tired of looking at.

Keeneland Race Course is the crown jewel. The spring meet runs in April and the fall meet runs in October, and both are worth planning your schedule around. Even if you are not into horse racing, the atmosphere at Keeneland is unlike anything else. People dress up, sip bourbon, and spend a perfect afternoon outdoors. Morning workouts are open to the public as well, usually running through the race meets, and there is something beautiful about watching thoroughbreds train at sunrise with coffee in your hand.

Big news for 2026: the Breeders' Cup World Championships are coming to Keeneland on October 30 and 31. Lexington's Distillery District sits just east of downtown and it has quietly become one of the best areas in the city to spend an afternoon or evening. I put my reputation behind this one.

Start at the Crank and Boom Craft Creamery truck in the district. Get the Bourbon and Honey flavor. You can thank me later.

James E. Pepper Distillery is one of the oldest distilleries in Kentucky with a genuinely interesting history. Tours are available and the space itself is beautiful. Barrel House Distillery is right there too, producing small-batch bourbon and rye in a warm, inviting tasting room. Town Branch Distillery is another local favorite if you want to do a full bourbon trail afternoon.

After your tastings, walk over to The Burl for live music. It is a beautifully restored train depot that hosts local and national artists Thursday through Sunday. There is also a retro arcade inside, which makes it a fun night out for couples or groups.

Manchester Music Hall rounds out the area as one of the best concert venues in the city. If you like live music at all, you will find yourself here more than once.

You could easily spend an entire day in the Distillery District. It rewards wandering.

Outdoor Life in Lexington: Parks, Trails, and Getting Outside

One of the things people are surprised by when they move here is how easy it is to get outside. Lexington has over 90 parks and green spaces, and the natural beauty of Central Kentucky is genuinely stunning.

Raven Run Nature Sanctuary is 734 acres of trails, woodlands, and streams that lead to a sweeping overlook of the Kentucky River Palisades. It is one of the most beautiful spots in the region and a lot of locals have kept it mostly to themselves. If you like hiking and want a peaceful escape without leaving town, this is your spot.

Gatton Park on the Town Branch is brand new and worth knowing about. It is a green space right downtown that weaves into 22 miles of connected bike and pedestrian paths. There are trails, art installations, live events, a dog park, and local food and drink. It is a great example of how Lexington is investing in its downtown core.

Jacobson Park is a 68-acre community park with trails, a dog park, playgrounds, and a fishing lake. Great for families and a popular spot on weekends.

For the adventurous, Boone Creek Outdoors offers zip lines up to 1,400 feet long suspended above some of Kentucky's most spectacular scenery. I have heard nothing but great things.

Lexington was recently named one of the top six food cities in the country, and anyone who lives here will tell you that is well deserved.

The Lexington Farmers Market runs on Saturday mornings at Henry A. Tandy Centennial Park downtown. Fresh produce, baked goods, local honey, flowers, and friendly faces. It is a community gathering as much as a market, and it is one of my favorite ways to spend a Saturday morning.

The Summit at Fritz Farm is the go-to for upscale shopping and dining in Lexington. Anthropologie, Pottery Barn, REI, and some of the best restaurants in the city are all here. It has a great energy and it is well designed. It is the kind of place you go with no agenda and end up spending two hours.

Downtown Lexington has a strong food scene with everything from farm-to-table spots and breweries to solid bourbon bars and some of the most consistently good neighborhood restaurants I have eaten at anywhere. OBC Kitchen is known for having over 650 different bourbons. Bella Cafe and Grille is wonderful for a relaxed dinner. Tony's of Lexington is an institution.

For arts and culture, the Lexington Opera House and Singletary Center for the Arts at the University of Kentucky both host high-quality performances throughout the year. And Rupp Arena is home to UK Wildcats basketball, which is its own category of things to experience in Lexington. If you are new here, just know that basketball is a religion and Rupp Arena on a game night is something you need to feel in person at least once.

Day Trips Within an Hour of Lexington

Part of why people love living in Lexington is the location. You are close to a lot.

Red River Gorge is the top day trip and worth repeating. Go in the fall especially.

Woodford Reserve Distillery in Versailles is about 30 minutes away. Beautiful grounds, excellent tours, and worth every minute.
